| A True Fact from every MSc Financial Mathematics Student who are doing research:
All research stuff you are able to do has already done by all other guys who are phD, Professors of Mathematics, Physics, Finanical Mathematics, etc, or Quant( who are phD also) in those Investment Bank.
For the traditional stuff, e.g. B-S in 70's, is a trivial case, but those things all beyond undergraduate level, but those related research are all a 'must' for your level
For 80's stuff, e.g., Hull & White model, crazy use of Freyman Kac, are already done by many guys, which is very mature, the people who are still doing some new discoveries are those big guys in those fields
For 90's stuff(just around 10-20 years ago), some popular models are crazily used by the market, they are mature, useful but not easy.....
For 00's stuffs, they are very heavily depends on those mature stuff in 90's, difficult stuff in 80's and general stuffs in 70's......That means in order to understand it, you have to read at least all related paper from 90's and 80's...
In my own case, i chose a topic in 'Utility Maximization used in portfolio optimization with bid-ask spread', which looks as a good topic, and seems not difficult (from related paper in the very first time). However, when you read more papers for solving this problem.......it really becomes a problem.......i don't understand too many stuff.....moreover, seems not possible for me to do in this stage....
OK, then i shifted my topic.....it seems ok now.....but found a lot of problem....too many people doing that....more than 20 thousand related paper in just ONE specific model...IMAGINE YOU GET A VERY BIG CAKE, AFTER 20000 PEOPLE HAD TASTED IT, HOW MUCH IS IT STILL LEFT?
